Parenting

Becoming a parent is a complex process with many influences including how we were parented, the products sold to us, the opinions of others, the culture surrounding us and our own brains and bodies. We can be overwhelmed by the many factors that influence how we show up for our children.

Understanding childhood development can be an important first step in deciding what to do and how to parent. We help you navigate the challenges that come along with parenting and support you to parent in the way that is right for you and your family.

Becoming a Parent

Whether you are beginning your parenting journey, have been parenting for a while, or have experienced loss, we want to come alongside you in navigating these experiences.

Fertility & Pregnancy

Growing your family is a transition that can come with many emotions, decisions and ambiguity. Each individual or couple faces different questions as they navigate family building. We are passionate about exploring these questions and helping people find clarity and greater ease as they work through this phase of life.

Parenting Over the Lifespan

As children grow our relationships shift and evolve. Conventional parenting wisdom isn’t always a good fit for a particular parent, child or family’s situation. We have experience working with diverse families and can join you in a thoughtful consideration of your parenting questions and how to approach your particular relationship and circumstance.

One of the most important predictors of success in therapy is your connection with your therapist. It is important to us that our clients achieve their therapeutic goals as efficiently as possible. The purpose of a 15 minute consult is to provide opportunity for you to ask questions, share your goals and needs, and get a sense of your therapist’s approach to therapy.

At the end of a 15 minute call, we hope that you have enough information to decide if there is a good fit between you and the therapist.

Grief & Loss

Life’s changes always involve loss. Even when things go smoothly or a transition is expected, parts of yourself and your life change forever. The loss that comes with transition is even more deep and complex when the change was unwanted or unanticipated.

For many people, there are challenges and painful experiences along the path of life that require compassionate care and support.

At Liminal Psychology, we are skilled in supporting people through difficult transitions, particularly on their parenting journey. Infertility, pregnancy loss, infant loss, traumatic births, and unexpected outcomes are all experiences that can create deep loss and grief. As therapists, we are acquainted with these losses and have supported many other people in finding a way through transition.

We can help you by:

  • providing relational space and safety to speak freely and be understood in your loss
  • honouring the deep importance of what you had and hoped for prior to your loss
  • Exploring and expressing what was lost and complicated feelings about what comes next.

Trauma

Trauma is an emotional and physical response to an intensely stressful event that overwhelms a person’s ability to cope with and make sense of what is happening. Trauma can occur throughout the lifespan but has particularly strong effects when experienced during an important period of development.

Trauma can influence how we see ourselves, relate to others, and navigate the world. In therapy, we work together to understand the impacts of trauma and apply treatments that will help people who have experienced trauma to calm their bodies and create healthy life structures.

  • We are experts in the treatment of developmental trauma, having consulted with and taught many individuals and organizations about how to create health and healing for traumatized children and adults.
  • We all have extensive experience working with individuals who have experienced developmental trauma and PTSD.
  • We are trained in evidence-based therapies that are effective treatments for trauma

Developmental Trauma

Developmental trauma refers to difficult or distressing experiences that occur during the lifespan, especially during a person’s childhood. These experiences can include things like neglect, emotional or physical abuse, or significant disruptions in attachment and connection. Developmental trauma can influence how we see ourselves, relate to others, and navigate the world. In therapy, we work together to understand what has happened and foster a healthier and more secure sense of self.

PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder)

PTSD is a response to a traumatic event that has overwhelmed a person’s ability to cope. It can result from experiences like accidents, abuse, or other life-threatening situations. Individuals with PTSD may find themselves re-experiencing the trauma through intrusive memories, nightmares, or flashbacks. They might also experience heightened anxiety, avoidance of reminders of the trauma, and changes in mood and thinking. Therapy for PTSD focuses on helping individuals process and manage these overwhelming experiences, gradually reclaiming a sense of safety and control.
